The SAVE Simulator

SAVE is an interactive simulation of an oil refinery environment. Refinery apprentices are trained in the simulator to operate equipment and plant correctly and in safety, before they operate in the real-world refinery. Plant and equipment are visualized via a virtual reality (VR) headset, with the user free to explore, operate complex and large machinery, scale ladders, read gauges, etc. SAVE also incorporates an option to visualize the inner-functioning of key apparatus, enhancing the learning experience. An experienced trainer follows the trainee’s progress in the SAVE simulator, and is able to direct the training session, give guidance, and ensure that any mistakes are addressed. History of the development and operational adoption of the SAVE simulator

OMV, Austria’s national oil and gas company, was first to recognize the potential of VR for refinery operator training. The SAVE simulator emerged from a technical cooperation between OMV and the Johannes Kepler University in Linz Austria, dating back to 1998. Roland Holm - a key partner at the University - subsequently established Phenomatics at the tech2b Business Incubator in Linz, as CEO. Since that time, the SAVE simulator has been continually expanded by Phenomatics, with numerous upgrades and new refinery apparatus added. SAVE now also incorporates an option to visualize inner-functioning of key apparatus, enhancing the learning experience. SAVE has been in continual use at OMV for training refinery operators in Austria and Germany for more than 20 years. Phenomatics is exclusively authorized to offer the SAVE simulator to interested organizations, and adoption has since followed at additional refinery clients in Germany. Training tasks using the SAVE simulator

The SAVE simulator incorporates the following:
  • Personal safety equipment
  • Process pumps with different seal systems
  • Reciprocating gas compressor
  • Gas separators
  • Heat exchangers
  • Industrial furnaces
  • Distillation column
  • Tanks and vessels
  • Valves of various types
  • Steam trap
  • Battery limit

Trainees are typically individually-trained on specific tasks/procedures using the SAVE simulator, supervised closely by a trainer. The live trainee experience in the SAVE simulator headset is mirrored on a separate PC screen, observed/directed by the trainer. Other trainees may of course also observe. Our accredited training partners are experts in their field. They offer simulator-training according to your needs. This may be direct training sessions for your trainees…or if preferred, they can train your own in-house trainers to perform this trainer role in future.
For further detailed information on procedures that can be trained within the SAVE simulator, contact Phenomatics.

How can I use the SAVE simulator in my organization?

Purchase of the SAVE simulator includes all necessary hardware plus a license to use the pre-loaded SAVE software (short-term, long-term, or non-expiring license). Full/flexible training (including training of your own trainers if desired) can be separately offered via our accredited training partners, according to your needs. Your own trainers are of course free to develop their own training programs using the SAVE simulator, when they have become familiar with the system. Contact Phenomatics for further information.

FAQ

How much SAVE simulator training do you suggest per trainee?

This depends on how much you plan to integrate SAVE simulator training into your total training program. This will likely become clearer after you have gained some operational familiarity with the SAVE simulator. We can put you in direct touch with the training departments of clients using the simulator if this is helpful.

What does the SAVE hardware consist of?

A headset. A small tracking device. Plus a powerful notebook computer. An enclosed arena for the trainee is not necessary: just 4m² floor space.

Can I upgrade my licence at some future date to a longer license?

In certain cases, yes. This will be transparent in our quotation(s).

Do I receive any updates to the SAVE simulation software as they become available?

Any software updates will be made available free of charge. This can usually be accomplished without a site visit from Phenomatics (download updates from a secure website).

Does Phenomatics offer training for the SAVE simulator?

Phenomatics is supported by training partners who are highly experienced oil and gas industry-insiders. They possess detailed knowledge of SAVE in operational use, and they operate independently from Phenomatics. Contact Phenomatics for further information.

Is the SAVE software integrated into my organization’s IT system? Does it need involvement of my IT department?

The SAVE simulator is totally self-contained with no connection to your IT system. Log-in is direct.
